During the Asian economic slow down of the early 1980s, Mr Chua Ser Keng heard about a special type of fish called Golden Arowana, it was believed that this species of fish would bring its owner Good Luck and Fortune.
Believing in its auspicious properties he decided to pioneer a business potential in the selling of Arowanas to aquariums and pet shops all throughout the city.Through his undying passion for the business, he gained an incredible knowledge into the world of aquariums and the innovative techniques that were used to maintain the creatures that dwell in them.
Armed with his hard earned experience as an Arowana specialist, he decided to venture into the aquatic pet business by renting part of a clothing store located at Marine Parade.By 1986, Mr Chua Ser Keng's business grew substantially and the store was known to its customers as " Sam Yick".
Sam Yick became a "Chua" family affair, even the young sons spent their entire school holidays in this intriguing aquatic business. By 1993, Sam Yick gained such extensive experience and reputation in the aquatic pet business that it began to specialize in other areas of rearing and selling of small animals.
